The OpenSpool printing system is no longer supported.

This document assumes you have read the general overview of printing. This document does not attempt to cover the lp system or its commands in detail; for that, see the man pages and Lrom.

Command index:

Checking Printing Status

lpstat [ -a[ <list> ] ] [ -o[ <list> ] ]

The lpstat command can be used to check the settings and status of most elements of the lp printing system.

The most useful options are -a, which lists whether queues are accepting or rejecting requests, and -o, which lists print requests. Both of these options will accept a comma-separated list of print queues, or will check all queues if no list is given. Note: If a list is given, there must not be any spaces between the -a or -o and the list.

For more detail and other options, see the man page.

Submitting a Print Request

lp [ -d<destination> ] [ filename ... ]

The lp command is used to submit a print request. You can use the -d option to specify the destination queue to send the print request to. If no filenames are specified, lp reads from standard input.

lp will print your print request ID. You will need this identifier if you decide to cancel the print request.

For more detail and other options, see the man page.

Canceling a Print Request

cancel <request ID>

The cancel command will remove a pending print request from the queue. If the request is already being sent to a printing device, only the parts that have not yet been transferred to the device will be canceled.

For more detail and other options, see the man page.
